Don’t Know What you Want? Use this simple Trick
Hello and welcome to Not Your Forever Job, the show that helps you get clear and confident in your career so you can progress and create the career you truly want! I’m Hayley Loren, a career coach and award winning engineer and science presenter.
Today we’re talking about how to know what you want and I’ve got a quick trick for you.
It may be you’re on a path that currently isn’t bad, but you’d like more certainty within yourself to know what you want at work and in your career as a whole. Or you fear going down the wrong path or ending up in 10 years in a job you don’t like. If you’re in this situation then this episode is for you, because I’ve got three tricks for identifying what you want.
Figuring out what you want can be a bit like detective work. For those of us that have lots of interests or weren’t born knowing exactly what they wanted to do, figuring out your path and what you want at work can be difficult. I was very much one of those average people at school, I didn’t have a partcualr gift, in fact, I loved both sciences and the arts. There was never a clear cut obvious route.
So to help you figure out what you want I have a quick trick for you. This might sound simple but it’s extremely powerful. And this is…
… start with what you DON’T want
You may be unclear on what you want, but I bet you know what you DON’T want.
- All you need to do is make a list of everything you don’t want in your career. Who’s job don’t you want, which activities in your job do you wish you didn’t have to do? What type of work don’t you want e.g you might not want to constantly sit at your computer, or you might not want to be client facing. Write as much down as you can about what you don’t want.
- This simple activity has the power to shed light on exactly what you DO want. The clearer and more specific you can be about what you don’t want, the more you’ll start to identify what you do want. You can use this trick to filter through all the clutter that’s in your mind.
- So here’s an example, let’s say you’re in a job that feels like somethings missing. Start by making a list of everything about the job that you don’t like. Include things about the people, location, type of work, give as much detail as possible. Once you’ve got your list read through it. Are there any noticeable problems or issues? Is there anything surprising? This list may help you to uncover some truths about your situation at work.
- You can also use this trick if you’re deciding to take a job or which career path to go down. Again make a list of everything you DON’T want. Then read through your list. Do any of the jobs or career paths require you to do any of what you don’t want? Of course all jobs involbe a percentage of things you don’t want to do, but you wouldn’t want to take a job or go down a path that had 50% of what you don’t like.
The great thing about this trick is that you can use it for almost any situation, even when you’re deciding a takeaway!
Hmm what do I want for a takeaway? I don’t want pizza and I don’t want Indian because I tried that and didn’t like that last time. So I guess it’s between thai or Lebanese, but I don’t want to spend that much money and the thai is pretty expensive, so Lebanese it is!
Understanding what you don’t want will help you slowly filter through the confusion to identify some important factors for you.
